HP DESKJET PRINTER INFORMATION
------------------------------
Version 4.11 of MusicEase incorporates support for the Hewlett-Packard
DeskJet 500 series of printers (but not including the 540/550 series, as
Hewlett-Packard decided to once again change the print codes for the 540
and 550 series). This has been a much requested feature, and we are very
excited that it is now available. But there are some unfortunate trade-offs
involved: Speed, and Large Fonts.
SPEED: The method used to create the output for the HP DeskJet printer
involves creating the output in "strips", with each strip then being
compiled into a final printer output file. Each strip is created in
memory, and the amount of memory required is based on the height of the
strip. (This is similar to the process used in some popular Desktop
Publishing applications that are on the market). We have set the individual
strip height to a low value, in order to minimize potential "Out Of Memory"
errors. The trade-off for this technique is that the compiling process is
very slow.
LARGE FONTS: Due to the lack of an "internal" large font in some basic
DeskJet printers, certain portions of the output may not be printed as
large as they normally would with other printers. For example, the "Title"
of the score is normally printed in a large font (16pt). If the DeskJet
printer does not have a large internal font, the resulting Title for the
printed page will be in the standard DeskJet font (12pt). If there is an
optional font cartridge installed which provides a large font, this may not
be a problem.
